An EICR is an assessment of the condition of an electrical installation. Here is what happens during the inspection and why the report matters.
What is an EICR?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report, commonly shortened to EICR, is used to assess the condition of an existing electrical installation. It is not simply a visual check: inspection and testing are used to identify damage, deterioration, defects and other issues that may affect safety.
What is inspected?
The electrician will consider the condition of the installation and its protective measures, including relevant circuits, earthing and bonding arrangements, distribution equipment and accessories where appropriate. The exact process depends on the property and the installation being assessed.
Understanding observations
Where issues are found, they are recorded on the report using recognised classifications. The report gives the property owner or responsible person a clearer picture of the installation’s condition and highlights where remedial work may be required.
Who can benefit from an EICR?
EICRs can be relevant to homeowners, landlords and businesses. The appropriate inspection frequency depends on the type and use of the premises, the condition of the installation and any applicable requirements, so property-specific advice is important.
What happens after the report?
If the report identifies defects, a qualified electrician can explain the findings and recommend suitable remedial work. This allows issues to be prioritised and corrected rather than relying on guesswork about the condition of the electrics.
